Four Things That Are Small But Wise
(작지만 지혜로운 네가지)
“Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise:
(지상에 작은 네가지가 있으니, 그러나 그들이 지극이 지혜로우니라:)
Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer；
(개미들은 작은 힘이 적은 생명체이나, 그들이 여름에 그들의 음식을 쌓아 놓으며,)
conies are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags；
(산악토끼는 작은 힘이 적은 생명체이나, 그들이 험준한 바위 틈에 그들의 집을 만드니라,)
locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks；
(메뚜기는 왕이 없으나, 그들은 열을 지어 함께 진행하느니라,)
a lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces.
(도마뱀은 손으로도 잡힐 수 있으나, 그것은 왕의 궁전에서 발견이 되느니라.)
“There are three things that are stately in their stride, four that move with stately bearing:
(당당하게 성큼성큼 다니는 세가지가 있으며, 당당한 자태로 움직이는 네가지가 있느니라:)
a lion, mighty among beasts, who retreats before nothing；
(짐승 중에 강력한 사자이니, 그런데 그것은 아무것 앞에서도 물러서지 않으며,)
a strutting cock, a he-goat, and a king with his army around him.
(뽐내는 걷는 수탉과, 수염소와, 그 주변에 군대가 있는 왕이나라.)
“If you have played the fool and exalted yourself, or if you have planned evil, clap your hand over your mouth!
(만약 네가 바보같이 행동하여 네 자신을 높히었거나, 네가 악을 도모했다면, 네 입을 네 손으로 막으라!)
For as churning the milk produces butter, and as twisting the nose produces blood, so stirring up anger produces strife.”
(왜냐하면 우유를 휘저으면 버터가 나오고, 또한 코를 비틀면 피가 나오듯이, 그렇듯, 화를 일으키면 분쟁이 생기기 때문이니라.)
