Purpose and Theme
(잠언의 목적과 주제)
The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
(다윗왕의 아들이며, 이스라엘의 왕, 솔로몬의 잠언들입니다.)
for attaining wisdom and discipline； for understanding words of insight；
(지혜를 얻게 하기 위한 것이며, 또한 통찰력있는 말씀들을 이해하게 하기 위한 것이며,)
for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair；
(훈육되고 신중한 삶을 획득하게 하기 위한 것이며, 옳은 것과 정의로운 것과 공평한 것을 행하도록 하기 위한 것이며,)
for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young -
(단순한 사람들에게 신중함을 주기 위한 것이며, 젊은 사람들에게 지식과 분별력을 주기 위한 것이며,)
let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance -
(지혜로운 사람들로 하여금 듣고 지식을 더하게 하려하는 것이며, 그리고 분별력있는 사람들에게 지침을 얻게 하려는 것이며,)
for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.
(잠언들과 우화들을, 또 현명한 사람들의 격언과 질문들을 이해하게 하려는 것입니다.)
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
(여호와를 두려워하는 것이 지혜의 시작입니다, 하지만, 어린석은 사람들은 지혜와 훈육을 멸시합니다.)
